The Long-Term Ecological Research Program (PELD, in portuguese) is a highly relevant initiative to obtain environmental information for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of Brazilian natural resources. Beyond to being one of the pioneers projects in the area, created in 1996, long-term research programs are relatively scarce in Brazil. The PELD provides research on ecosystem composition, functioning and dynamics, and the effects of changes caused by natural and / or anthropogenic disturbances, as well as the understanding of key ecological processes and patterns that shape the planet’s biodiversity and its environmental services ( Adaptation from PELD web site).
