Being located in the central region of Brazil, the Laboratory of Ecosystems of the University of Brasília acts mainly in freshwater ecosystems located in the Cerrado. Considered ‘the cradle of waters’, the Cerrado is home of eight of the ten main Brazilian river basins. Despite its important for the preservation of Brazil’s waters, many of its springs and watercourses are suffering great anthropic impacts, arising from changes in land use, hydroelectric construction, overexploitation of resources or eutrophication of the rivers. The laboratory works mainly on topics as biogeochemistry, trophic interactions and ecosystemic effects of the dynamics of aquatic organisms.
