Nature News highlights the efforts of the conservative coalition that dominates Brazil’s Congress to approve law proposals that roll back environmental regulations. The final push is intended to advance on their agenda before campaigns for the country’s October presidential election ramp up. One of the proposals include the possibility to open up the Amazon rainforest to sugarcane farming. Another proposal would weaken licensing requirements for infrastructure projects. Brazilian researchers Mercedes Bustamante, Carlos Nobre, and Paulo Barreto also comment on this matter.
